Wage and Hour Laws — A Special Focus: Employers must comply with state and federal laws for the payment of wages. California's wage and hour laws are some of the most protective in the country. Most employees have the right to overtime pay, wages for missed meal periods, and minimum wage, or more, for all the hours they work. Employees must often be reimbursed for business expenses that they pay out-of-pocket to perform their duties. Employers in California must also pay all earned wages, including unused vacation, either immediately or within 72 hours of employment termination. Hinton Alfert Sumner & Kaufmann has recovered millions of dollars in back pay, expenses, interest, and penalties for employees who have been denied their earnings.
Our attorneys have extensive experience bringing class actions for groups of employees as well as claims for individuals. We have achieved great results for our clients against some of California's and the nation's largest employers, including insurance companies, high tech firms, retail stores, food distributors, financial institutions, hotel and restaurant chains, transportation operations, and many other types of businesses. These successes have resulted in money recovery for thousands of workers and also changes in industry practices that benefit employees.
